ABOUT THIS BOOK SALE, postage rates, how to order

Welcome to our book sale! Here you will find listings of horse, farrier, and veterinary books that are NOT normally offered by Hoofcare Publishing--and a few that are, but are being discontinued. These may be leftovers, damaged copies, or hard-to-find used books that are frequently requested.  This list has been in the making for months but they won't last so if you see something you want to order...don't wait!

This list is offered to our regular customers, blog readers and magazine subscribers before going to the public. This is because I would rather keep the special ones inside our circle of friends and readers.

If you are looking for a particular book, let me know. I may have a copy but just haven't listed it yet. I can also obtain almost any book for you. Let me know what you are looking for.

If you see a book you want, call or email your order with Visa/MC account information and your address, phone and email address. Paypal orders via the "send money" tool to Franjurga@gmail.com.

All sales are final. Payment must accompany order. No holds.

Note: Every effort will be made to keep this list up to date, however, if a book has been been sold, it will not be available. Please forgive me if that happens,  because there are a lot of books to keep track of!

Postage will be minimal, unless you need the books by a certain date. If shipped media mail, a group of books should only be a few dollars per book. A single book by itself with delivery confirmation in a padded mailer with a big swath of bubble wrap, etc. is usually $5, so that would be the base cost for the first book. Each additional book, add $2. For large orders, we can compute the postage separately and charge you later if you are paying by Visa or Mastercard.

POSTAGE IN USA: First book $5, each additional book $2.

CLICK HERE FOR PAYPAL; just follow the "send money" instruction. "Send" the total amount of your order to franjurga@gmail.com (fill in on PayPal form). Supply your email and/or phone for order confirmation.

Canada and overseas: please send an email with your list of books and we will compute the postage for you, so you won't be overcharged. Some books are quite light and postage could be a lot less than you think. There is no insurance or tracking on overseas orders.

Have fun! Call or email with questions.

Horseshoes for Horse Owners: A Handbook of Observations
by Beverly Estabrook CJF
This book was way ahead of its times. It is self-published with plastic coil binding but don’t judge this book by its cover. It’s terrific! Designed to get horse owners interested in hooves and explain the hows and whys of caring for feet and getting along with farriers. Author is a farrier in North Carolina and an old friend. $10 plus post. I have several copies.

On the Horse's Foot, Shoes and Shoeing: The Bibiographic Record and a Brief Timeline History of Horseshoeing
by Henry Heymering
Hardcover, St Eloy,1990, first printing
I talked Henry into doing this project. At first people didn't understand this book, now they "get it". Here's quite possibly the last like-new unblemished copy on the planet. Simply the most important historical record of the horse's hoof ever compiled and one of the books I'd grab if the building was on fire. Partly because I know it can't be replaced. Limited edition. Collector's dream: $150 plus post.

Be sure to check the sections on biomechanics, laminitis, lameness, veterinary medicine, anatomy, etc.!

The Lame Horse: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments
By James R. Rooney
Hardcover, 1974, first edition, 237 pages
Very lighted used book, front flap has been price clipped. Minor edgewear and rubbing along spine.  This is THE book. The classic reference for biomechanics and lameness from the great and opinionated equine pathologist. Yes, there's a newer edition, but this one is great for reference and the source of so many diagrams that have become standard instructional media for lameness and conformation studies. Hats off to Dr. Rooney, whether you agree with him or not. Nice to have in hardcover. $25 plus post. Two copies left. Also one in softcover (also 1974 edition) $15.

Equine Veterinary Medicine, Horse Health Including Lameness, Nutrition

Basic First Aid for Horses
by William Jones, DVM, editor, from material in
The Horse: Its Treatment in Health and Disease by Prof. Wortley Axe (1908)

Dr Jones had the clever idea to make a "greatest hits" album from the nine-volume Axe series on equine health published 100 years ago. This is the (condensed) volume on general horse first aid and hygiene, design of stables, etc. Great illustrations especially on bandaging. This is probably highly collectible now but it's good information for owners. I wish I had the original Axe volumes! $10 plus post. Softcover.

Equine Dermatologby Danny Scott and William H. Miller Jr.
Saunders/Elsevier, 2003
This comprehensive clinical textbook for veterinarians covers skin diseases of the horse from essential basics to practical diagnostic methods, therapy, and specific abnormalities and defects. Well illustrated and expertly written by two of the leaders in equine dermatology, this focused presentation discusses all aspects of bacterial, allergic, and environmental skin disease. Relevant topics in a clinically useful format make this an ideal resource for all veterinarians, in addition to anyone specializing in equine medicine. Includes both color and black-and-white photos. Note that there is a 2nd edition available for three times the price. Great reference for vasculitis, pastern dermatitis, coronitis, pemphigus, keratin disorders...and everything else. This is an unsold leftover copy still sealed in plastic wrap. Bargain price: $30 plus post.

BLACKSMITHING and TOOLS

From Eric Sloane's "A Museum of Early American Tools"

A Museum of Early American Tools
by Eric Sloane
Softcover, 1975 edition, used, 110 pages
If you don't know who the author is...you are in for a treat. And if you do know him, you know that this is an important book, an inventory of tools rendered in realistic pen-and-ink drawings. You'll refer to this book again and again. $5 plus post.

Catching the Fire:
Philip Simmons, Blacksmith
by Mary E. Lyons
Hardcover, all color photos.
It looks like a children's book but it's a blacksmithing book. It's the story of Charleston, South Carolina smith Philip Simmons and his 70 years crafting  gates and scrolls and intricate architectural details in that iron-decorated city. Lots of great photos of Mr. Simmons and other old-timer smiths at work. A section on his tools and on the evolution of blacksmithing. He was declared a "national treasure" among many other awards. Includes a bibliography. Special. All color photos, a new copy. $10 plus post.

Colonial People: The Blacksmith
A Bobbie Kalman book
Softcover, 32 pages, color illustrations and photo, Crabtree
I suppose that this was designed to be a children's book, but it is one of the best books to explain blacksmithing to anyone not familiar with the tools, the forge, and the role of different people. It shows blacksmiths and farriers at work at different museums or doing demonstrations. Include apprentices, shoeing horses, and lots of good history. Brand new, last copy, half price $4 plus post

Early Tools and Equipment
by Elmer Smith, 7th printing, 1983, 32 pages plus soft cover
Inventory of Early American tools of all trades, with great photos assembled in big double-page spreads. The tools are not individually identified. 13 different top anvil tools are shown plus different designs of buttresses, firing irons, etc. from someone's very nice collection of farrier tools. Tools from all crafts and farm life. Interesting stuff. $3 plus post.

The Great Tool Emporium
by David X. Manners
Hardcover, 1985, 398 pages, dust jacket, lightly used (by me)
The roots of tools...and their evolution. You'll love this book. Who knew that vice grip pliers were invented in Dewitt, Nebraska by a Danish-American blacksmith named Bill Petersen? What's the origin of the farrier's beloved angle grinder or drill press? Why do you get more pressure on hoof nippers (or any pincer-type tool) if they are designed with a short distance from bite to hinge--instead of longer? And (look out, Mustad!) who knew that Leonardo da Vinci invented a rasp-making machine in 1490? Is there anything he didn't invent? This book is not too technical on the engineering side, but it is rich on the history side and vastly detailed with an unbelievable variety of specialized tools under each of 61 tool categories. Giant fun. $10 plus post.

Keen Kutter Antique and Collectible Hand Tools 1989 Price Guide compiled by John Walter, published by The Tool Merchant, 64 pages
Pocket-sized soft-cover guide to antique tools is a handy guide but also contains nice old cuts of each tool, great for reference if you need to tell a shingling hatchet from a tobacco hatchet, for instance. Includes some blacksmithing tools. $2 plus post.

Manual of Foundry and Pattern Shop Practice
by Otis Benedict Jr. of The Pratt Institute
Hardcover, first edition, 1947, 361 pages
So you want to make your own tools. Do you understand the principles of how a foundry works? This was the textbook at The Pratt Institute and other engineering schools. It is a language and a world unto itself--and fascinating. $5 plus post.

The New Scroll Saw Handbook
by Patrick Spielman
Softcover, 352 pages
If there is anything about scroll saws that was left out of this encyclopedic guidebook, I'd be very surprised. Once you meet the parts and uses of a scroll saw, you learn their history. Then a guide to all the ones currently on the market. The accessories. How to buy one. "Blades, speeds and feeds". Safety, Patterns and layouts. And THEN there are about 10 chapters on how you get the effect you want. I'm so impressed with this book. It's new, too. $10 plus post.

HEAVY HORSES: Draft, Brewery, Working, Showing, Logging and Farming

Care and Showing of the Heavy Horse
by Edward Hart
British, hardcover, first edition, Batsford, 1981
One of the great all-time books on heavy horses from Great Britain, from one of my all-time favorite authors and horse writers. Strong on the Shire horse, this book explains the showing system and goes through buying, training, show preparation, decorated classes (wow!), vehicles for cart and driving events, juding, open days, ploughing matches, etc.

It even has a chapter on farrier competitions featuring photos of, I do believe, the late great Mr. Eric Plant FWCF at the Great Yorkshire Show. I can "hear" him speaking through the text on why the inside branch might be thinned or the toe clip offset and just what bevelling is all about.

There are refererences to individual horses who worked for Thwaites and other breweries--right down to how they wore their shoes. Favorite tip: use pig oil to keep a mane in its place and as a hoof oil.

I love this book and have a copy myself that I treasure. It is rare to see one these days. This is in great shape, flap was price-clipped so it was a gift to someone who probably never read it. They missed a lot. $20 plus post.

Fire Engines, Firefighters: The Men, Equipment and Machines from Colonial Days to the Present

by Paul Ditzel
Rutledge/Crown Press, hardcover, 1976
They left "the horses" out of the title, but they certainly did not leave the horses out of the book!  Much on horse-drawn fire engines and many great old photos of fire horses! Great photo of a team of grays from the Los Angeles Fire Department getting hitched with the famous drop-down harness. A heart-breaking photo of the gray middle horse in a three-abreast team going down on the street. Even the non-horse content is great in this book. No dust jacket, rubs on front endpaper from old tape remnants (probably a gift note?) otherwise like-new condition. $20 plus post and sooooo worth it!

Horsemanship, Behavior, Training, Spirit, Animal Rights and the Human-Horse Bond

The Horse Boy
by Rupert Isaacson
Little Brown, 2009, hardcover, non-fiction, NEW
An autistic boy in Texas calms down visibly when his father takes him to watch the horses next door. And when he starts riding with the child in the saddle in front of him, peace comes over both of them and a deeper relationship evolves. So Rupert got this crazy idea to take his son on an epic horseback journey through the horsiest place on earth: remote Mongolia! In search of understanding handicaps and mental illness in a different culture, Rupert and his wife learn a lot about their son, their circumstance and how American society sets handicapped children apart--while in other places they may be embraced as truly special. The shamans of Siberia and Mongolia were hard to figure, but they saw something special, not ill, in little Rowan. This book has horses as its engine, to be sure, but it goes beyond the horse-human bond to explore new territory--in many more ways than one.

This book was dismissed by the horse world because the boy wouldn't wear a helmet and went into tantrum mode if anything was put over his head. And his father worked around it. The helmet issue was a dealbreaker and I was branded a heretic myself for endorsing this book. I think this book has a lot to offer and will continue to promote it, helmets or not. It's interesting that the author later won an American Horse Publication award. A documentary film was also made of their journey and can be bought on DVD.

I will give a copy of this book to any customer who will promise to get past the helmet issue and read it.
That's right, it's free, while supplies last. People need to read this book.

Ranch of Dreams
By Cleveland Amory
Hardcover, 1997, first edition
This book is in like-new condition except for a gift inscription in the front. Apparently the recipient didn't read her gift book--she left it for you to do that. Subtitle is "The Heartwarming Story of America's Most Unusual Animal Sanctuary". You've heard of the Black Beauty Ranch in Texas? Of course. This book takes you there and explains what built the place and the dream behind it.
Very well written. 288 pages. $5 plus post.

The Revolution in Horsemanship and What It Means to Mankind
by Robert M Miller DVM and Rick Lamb
Soft cover, Lyons Press, 2005, 354 pages, illustrated and indexed, new
Simply one of the best books on horse training ever. Of course it is expounding on natural horsemanship, but it fits it into the bigger picture of horse-human relations and history. I have always thought this book was exemplary and am very proud to have been part of the chapter on "the hoofcare debate". We have several unsold but brand, shiny new copies. Uncracked, untouched, and half price. List price is $25 so you can order as many as you like for $12.50 plus post.
