HORSES IN HISTORY

Yankee Doodle Dandy: The Life and Times of Tod Sloan
by John Dizikes, softcover, trade paper size, Yale University Press.
This is quite collectible, as it is the advance uncorrected page proof from the publisher. Includes images stamped FPO. A rough cut but the text is readable if you want a good read, or sell it on eBay as a racing collectible for a fortune. There are some kitty teeth marks at bottom of first few pages. (sorry about that)

Todd Sloan, of course, was the famous American jockey who went to England and caused a scandal with his "forward seat". This is the man who gave us short, short stirrups. He was one of the country's great celebrities as the turn of the century and should not be forgotten. $10 plus post.

The Animals' Who's Who: 1,146 Celebrated Animals in History, Popular Culture, Literature and Lore

From Francis the Talking Mule to Miss Piggy to Red Rum, they are all here, with dates and details. A trivia lover's delight!

HORSES IN ART, MUSIC, LITERATURE, ARCHITECTURE, CULTURE

My favorite Mongolian photo from Wild Lives by the French photographer Tibo

Wild Lives: Horseback Cultures from Idaho to Indonesia
Text by Sylvie Lebreton, Photographs by TIBO
2001, hardcover with dust jacket, oversized "coffee table" book
Extravagant and expressive, a world tour with one of my favorite photographers, the great French TIBO...so wonderful he doesn't need a last name. Go with Tibo to the island of Sumba in Indonesia...to Andalusia in Spain...to Cameroon in Africa...to Hortobagy in Hungary...to Idaho and Montana in the USA...to Morocco in North Africa....to Jordan...to Mongolia...and finally to Patagonia at the tip of South America. Tibo's photos are world class and you will live vicariously through them. This has been one of our most successful gift books ever and this is, sadly, the last copy (except in my personal library, of course). It is close-to-pristine condition, with a bit of what they call "shelfwear" on the edges. Under the dust jacket (which is probably the least wonderful thing about the book), the cover is bright purple, and laminated. I took the dust jacket off mine and let it shine on the coffee table. There is only one copy left. To a good home only. Bargain price for a great, great book: $20 plus post.

Soft cover, approx 400 pages, black and white and color photos.
This book is a treasure and
one of my favorites. It is a photographic history of horse racing, with captions in English, French, and German. These are art photographs, the crisp black and white images that tell us so much about what went before. I will never part with my copy but this is one we had to sell and it's the sort of thing that people need to see, unless they are lovers of photography or horse history. Is that you? Then this is for you at the bargain price of $5 plus post.

The Most Beautiful Horses

The Royal Mews (Buckingham Palace)
Soft cover, color and black and white photos, 28 pages
A guide book to the stables at Buckingham Palace, includes photos of coaches and the Windsors riding and driving. Published perhaps in the 1970s, this is a period snapshot of the horsiest family in the world, just before all the scandals hit. Nicely done, and the driving details are excellent. How do you get the job of postillion? $3 plus post.

Man and the Horse: The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Hardcover, color and black and white plates, 128 pages, 1984, oversized "coffee table" book
Introduction by Diana Vreeland. Three essays comprise this richly illustrate book that accompanied a lavish exhibit of equestrian art in New York 25 years ago. The over-riding (ahem) theme is fashion, or at least the clothing one wears around horses, so the chapters are: 1) Man and the Horse: The Evolution of Riding and Its Influence on Equestrian Costume by Alexander Mackay-Smith; 2) Aside and Astride: A History of Ladies' Riding Apparel by Jean Druesdow; and 3) Fashion on Wheels by Thomas Ryder, the famed driving expert. The photos of old time children's riding fashions and ponies/donkeys are the best part of this book, althought the Stubbs plates are pretty fabulous. If you know anyone who is into sidesaddle outfits, this book has some lovely plates and photos. I love this book but don't know why I had two copies, so now you can have one two. $10 plus post.

AGRICULTURE, RURAL CULTURE, COUNTRY LIFE, FARMING

Le Charolais
by Daniel Meiller and Paul Vannier
259 pages, soft cover, oversized "coffee table book"

I've never seen such a lavish book about a breed of anything (except maybe Arabian horses--maybe!) This book is in French but it doesn't matter since it is mostly photos and the photos are amazing. Here's the history and the state of the world's Charolais cattle in a beautifully designed book meant for the coffee tables of ranches all over the world. Wow, is all I can say. The corners are a little bent. You will love it. $40 plus post.

Farm Animals in the Making of America
Wallace Homestead Book Company; 1975; Paperback; 128 pages
Illustrated with more than 200 rare engravings from the Golden Age of American livestock breeding. Duplicate copy is a little beat up, some page are loose, but you may want to use this book for reference, copying or scanning. It is a gem. There is a very strong midwestern emphasis, especially on the lengthy section about draft horses. You can learn a lot. Includes plans for an octagonal barn and a beautiful ad from the Putnam Nail Company in Neponset, Massachusetts, plus Dr Roberge's patented hoof expander. And that's just the first few pages. This is a standard reference book around here. $10 plus post.

The Countryman: Winter 1971-73

I collect these fantastic book-like magazines from the UK and have a couple of duplicates. Each is like a paperback book with a spine, sort of like Readers Digest in the old days, but more pages and smaller.

This edition includes an account of Scotland's last stagecoachman...across the South Downs on horseback...the wildest inhabited spot in England...fishing villages of the Firth of Forth...plus much more and lots of poems, black and white drawings and woodcuts, practical info on country living, birdwatching, and some very fine photojournalism. I want to live in this world. 208 pages. $3 plus post.

The Countryman: Summer 1974
Another duplicate! Sorry the cover is loose on this one. 208 pages of good stuff! You'll see why I collect these. This one has a black and white photo essay of gypsy wagons. $3 plus post.

Here's the trade paperback edition. Big enough to get your hands around and you will keep them there for all 561 pages. This book is one that I enjoyed immensely, though I sometimes got confused about which horse was which. This isn't the copy I read, though. I wish it had been so nice. This is a brand new copy that I thought would sell, but my farrier and vet customers weren't convinced they wanted to read it. But you know better. Jane Smiley did win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, after all. It is a little worn around the edges from its travels to trade shows. $8 plus post.

Oh, and how the sports teams do. Worth a read $2 plus post.

Our Horses in Egypt
by Rosalind Belben
Hardcover, 310 pages.
The best storyline for a novel in years. Emma Thompson will definitely play the lead when they make this a movie. At the end of World War I, a British woman is distressed when the local boys come home but her mare who was donated to the army does not. She finds out she was abandoned in Egypt with all the other British mounts. So...she goes to bring back her favorite hunter. And what she finds and how she manages is quite a tale. Told also from the horse's experience. You will never forget the Dorset Yeomanry marching across Palestine and the farriers who had no shoes for the horses...and how they suffered. What an unusual and remarkable book. I'm selling it just because I think someone else should read it. I had it sent over from England. $10 plus post
