HOOF CARE, FARRIERY, SHOEING

THE HORSE: A Complete Guide to Its Care and Handling, 3rd edition
by John M. Kays
Hardcover with dust jacket, 1982. Way out of print.
I am including this under farrier science because it contains the most extensive show of mid-20th century gaited and Standardbred shoes, plus vintage Scotch bottoms. Lots of the shoes seem to be from a collection at Ohio State University. Book covers all breeds and sports as an overall manual of type, conformation, faults and especially shoeing. Author taught equine science at UConn. The keg shoes will show you just how far we have come in 25 years. Interesting that almost all other shoes are handmade--roller toe, toe weight, heel weight, offset toe weighit, harness pony front, harness pony hind with trailer, cross-firing shoe, etc. etc. and chromed. Who made these shoes? Where are they now? (sigh) Great pix of Kelso, Seattle Slew, Serafix, Three Bars--all the great horses we grew up with. At any rate, this is a duplicate from the Hoofcare & Lameness reference library. I guess I liked it so much I bought it twice; will sell for what we paid for it. $20 plus post.

A small pile of these special reports was just unearthed, like treasures in an archeological dig. Sale price $15 each (normally $20) plus post outside USA.

16th Annual Bluegrass Laminitis Symposium 2003 Lecture Notes, Market Guide and General Information.
Papers by Redden, Rucker, Mihaloff-Kirshner, Castelijns, Clayton, Parelli, Grohs, Lyle, etc. Coil-bound.
This was a great year. I somehow ended up with two copies. It would not be ethical to sell it, because I did not pay for it, so let’s say that this is a copy looking for a good home. Tell me a good reason why you should have it and it’s yours.

Horseshoes for Horse Owners: A Handbook of Observations
by Beverly Estabrook CJF
This book was way ahead of its times. It is self-published with plastic coil binding but don’t judge this book by its cover. It’s terrific! Designed to get horse owners interested in hooves and explain the hows and whys of caring for feet and getting along with farriers. Author is a farrier in North Carolina and an old friend. $10 plus post. I have several copies.

WILD HORSES

The Last Of The Wild Horses
[Paperback] by Harbury, Martin; photos by Ron Watts, Preface by Richard Adams
Oversized, all color photos
This was the display copy; some shop wear on corners but otherwise very fine. Great world tour of wild horse sites, makes you want to pack your bags. Covers Przewalskis in Mongolia, tarpans in Poland, British Isles ponies, white horses of France's Camargue, Canada's Sable Island horses, Aussie brumbies, American mustangs, etc. Highly recommended! The cover doesn't do it justice. Much more in-depth than just another book about wild horses, in my opinion. $12.00 each plus post

HORSE Breeds and Sports

The Thoroughbred World
by Walter D. Osborne
Hardcover, used, 181 pages, oversized, many photographs, no dust jacket, 1971
A luscious look at American Thoroughbred racing on the night before Secretariat. They had no idea what was about to hit them! (Not to mention the rise of Florida as a breeding and training state) Lots of history here, you can see that the old world of Thoroughbred racing knew changes were coming. It's all laid out here; they just didn't know where they going. A great read, great reference. $10 plus post.

Run for the Roses: 100 Years at the Kentucky Derby
by Jim Bolus
Hardcover with dust jacket, coffee-table size, 209 pages, 1974
Oh, what a great book! Full of archival photos of people and horses. A whole chapter on Silky Sullivan! And one on Canonero II! Great coverage of Swaps and Nashua. And of course it all ends with Secretariat winning the 99th Kentucky Derby. This book is printed on high quality paper. The old photos just shine. It's a treasure but I only need one copy, so this one is for sale. $10 plus post.

A Year at the Races: Reflections on Horses, Humans, Love, Money, and Luck

by Jane Smiley
Hardcover, new, 290 pages, dust jacket
Did you read the novel Horse Heaven? This is nonfiction about racing from the same author. She looks fondly and coldly, alternately, at racing traditions and life at the track. She really does own Thoroughbreds and she really did win the Pulitzer Prize. There are some interesting stories in here, my favorite title is "Two Gals, a Horse and the Baby Jesus". I have another copy that she gave me that awas autographed and inscribed, so this one is a duplicate. Make it yours! Price new $22; this one is yours for $5 plus post.

101 Trail Riding Tips: Helpful Hints for Backcountry and Pleasure Riding
by Dan Aadland
Soft cover, new, 165 pages.
A collection of good advice for trail riders and for western-style riding in general. Each page is a short tip, so this book is easy to glance through. I never heard of a tackaberry, did you? Cost new $12.95, this one is $5 plus post. Perfect condition.

101 Hunter/Jumper Tips: Essentials for Riding on the Flat and Over Fences
by Jessie Shiers
Soft cover, new, 182 pages.
These are quite specific tips for the show ring oriented rider. Again, great for a quick read, short attention span, bathroom fare. It would make a good gift, and a motivator, too! Perfect condition $5 plus post.

Hunter Seat Equitation
by George H. Morris
FIRST EDITION, 1971.
It is worth the price just to buy this book to see the photo of The George on the back cover. What a lot of hair! He studied with George Wright (see entry for Learning to Ride, Hunt, and Show) and I never knew that! Anyway, this is a very collectible book! $12 plus post.

Spruce Meadows 2004 Yearbook
232 pages, soft cover, oversized
Spruce Meadows is one of my favorite places. Find out why when you peruse the 2004 yearbook, which is a who's who of international show jumping, covering all the glamorous events hosted at the Calgary super-show site. Find out why it is everyone's favorite place to show, or watch a show. $3 plus post.

Jumping: Learning and Teaching
by Jean Froissard
Softcover, 204 pages, black and white photos
The classic French text for show jumping with elan. All the great champions of the 60s are shown, particularly from the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. If I look at this book one more time, I will keep it! $3 plus post.

Riding and Jumping
by William Steinkraus
Hard cover, dust jacket (stained), 131 pages.
It says this is the "new and revised" edition, published in 1969. I should probably keep this just for photos of the riders. And the photos of the dressage champion horses from the 1950s and 1960s--how the warmblood has changed (and how fit they looked back then)! Truly, this is the classic book on jumping instruction, pre George Morris. $4 plus post.

Know About Horses
A Ready Reference Guide to Horses, Horse People, and Horse Sports
By Harry Disston, illustrated by Jean Bowman. Hardcover with dust jacket, 1961.
A super copy of one of the all-time great reference books. Contains glossaries and fast facts on all horse sports and care matters with gorgeous pencil drawings. A fantastic and fast place to look something up! Did you know that the first jumping race was held in 1934 at the Jockey Club track in Washington DC? And that it is traditional to always pull on the left boot first? Do you know what the difference is between a lancer, a dragoon and a hussar? I didn’t think so. (Neither did I until just now.) One corner of the dust jacket is ripped. You’ll enjoy this book! This is a duplicate copy for the office library. $5 plus post

The Complete Training of Horse and Rider In the Principles of Classical Horsemanship
By Alois Podhajsky, Former Director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.
A lovely hardcover with dust jacket, very little wear. This is the 1967 American printing. No marks, dust jacket flap has been price clipped. This book is the manifesto of the Spanish Riding School and its application to the development of all horses. Probably the most influential book on horse training ever published. This is an especially nice copy! $12 plus post.

Seabiscuit, An American Legend
by Laura Hillenbrand
Softcover, 399 pages plus readers's guide for book groups, indexed. 2001. Large format softcover.

BLACKSMITHING and TOOLS

Keen Kutter Antique and Collectible Hand Tools 1989 Price Guide
compiled by John Walter, published by The Tool Merchant, 64 pages
Pocket-sized soft-cover guide to antique tools is a handy guide but also contains nice old cuts of each tool, great for reference if you need to tell a shingling hatchet from a tobacco hatchet, for instance. Includes some blacksmithing tools. $2 plus post.

The Making, Shaping and Treating of Steel
Edited by Harold E. McGannon, 9th edition, 1971
Published by the United States Steel Corporation, this 1,420 page tome is the be-all and end-all of steel history, technology and metallurgy. Yes, it is older but I've never found a newer one. I purchased this book as a reference for editing blacksmithing articles, but it hasn't been used in a while and it seems like it would be of use to someone who is interested in toolmaking. Includes the entire and exhaustive history of ironmaking and development of the steel industry, through 52 chapters. Nothing short of amazing. It weighs a ton. $10 plus post.

Early Tools and Equipment

Inventory of Early American tools of all trades, with great photos assembled in big double-page spreads. The tools are not individually identified. 13 different top anvil tools are shown plus different designs of buttresses, firing irons, etc. from someone's very nice collection of farrier tools. NATURAL HISTORY, PALEONTOLOGY, COMPARATIVE ZOOLOGY, Etc.

Horses: The Natural History Library
by George Gaylord Simpson
A book everyone should own. And READ! One of the pillar's of an equine science library. The former curator of the American Museum of Natural History sets forth the not-so-simple story of equine evolution. A small book with a big message. Worth it just for the capter on the evolution of the foot. Puts to rest once and for all that the horse gradually shed all its toes but one. Equine evolution has been an untrimmed shrub rather than a neatly branching tree. Written in 1961, still quoted today. $5 plus post.

The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story

The Dog Who Spoke With Gods
by Diane Jessup
Softcover, 2001
I wasn't sure where to put this one. It is a novel, technically, but it is so great, I wanted to be sure that anyone interested in dogs would find this listing. This book won the Dog Writer's Merial Human-Animal Bond Award, with good reason. This book will tear you apart, as a medical researcher is emotionally drawn to one of the research dogs in her lab. We need more books like this one. In close to new condition, just one corner bump, etc. $5 plus post.

Star in the Storm
By Joan Hiatt Harlow; hardcover with dust jacket, published in 2000. 150 pages.
Ah, a young adult novel about Newfoundland and that most noble of all dogs, The Newf. When non-shepherd dogs are banned from her village in 1912, Maggie vowed to hide and protect her beloved Newfie. What happens when the gale comes up makes for exciting reading but the whole book is a tribute to the fishing culture of Newfoundland. This is a great book…and not just for kids. BIRDS

The New Parrot Handbook: Everything About Purchase, Acclimation, Care, Diet, Disease and Behavior of Parrots, With A Special Chapter on Raising Parrots

Birds on the Couch: The Bird Shrink's Guide to Keeping Polly from Going Crackers and You Out of the Cuckoo's Nest
by Ruth Hanessian with Wendy Bounds: Hardover, dust jacket, 1998: This book sounds like a joke, but it's the real thing. Not all parrots and macaws are as aberrant in behavior as the ones described in this book, but if you are owned by a bird and think YOU have problems, the examples in this book will put things in perspective for you...with a smile. This is a used copy, in new condition. Former owner's name is on title page. $3 plus post

Guide to Canary Breeding and Exhibiting
A Cage Birds Handbook
by W.E. Brooks

A beautiful book with gorgeous color plates. I think this may be a very valuable book. It is from London, no date but I would guess the 1940s or early 1950s? This extolls the virtues of about 15 breeds of canary and talks about bird shows as well as health and management. Very detailed on captive breeding. Fascinating. $10 plus post is probably a great bargain.

FISH, SNAKES AND OTHER UNUSUAL PETS

You Want a What for a Pet?
A Guide to 12 Alternative Pets

Hardcover, laminated cover, 212 pages, color and black and white images
I have to admit, I'm not tempted by some of the pets in this book. But if your desires include owning and loving a ball python, chinchilla, ferret, frog/toad, green iguana, hedgehog, tarantula, hermit crab, miniature potbellied pig, rat/mouse, salamander, or turtle/tortoise, this is the book where you start. Ok, so I might consider a hedgehog...This is a brand new book.
