HORSES IN ART, MUSIC, LITERATURE, ARCHITECTURE, CULTURE

My favorite Mongolian photo from Wild Lives by the French photographer Tibo

Wild Lives: Horseback Cultures from Idaho to Indonesia
Text by Sylvie Lebreton, Photographs by TIBO
2001, hardcover with dust jacket, oversized "coffee table" book
Extravagant and expressive, a world tour with one of my favorite photographers, the great French TIBO...so wonderful he doesn't need a last name. Go with Tibo to the island of Sumba in Indonesia...to Andalusia in Spain...to Cameroon in Africa...to Hortobagy in Hungary...to Idaho and Montana in the USA...to Morocco in North Africa....to Jordan...to Mongolia...and finally to Patagonia at the tip of South America. Tibo's photos are world class and you will live vicariously through them. This has been one of our most successful gift books ever and this is, sadly, the last copy (except in my personal library, of course). It is close-to-pristine condition, with a bit of what they call "shelfwear" on the edges. Under the dust jacket (which is probably the least wonderful thing about the book), the cover is bright purple, and laminated. I took the dust jacket off mine and let it shine on the coffee table. There is only one copy left. To a good home only. Bargain price for a great, great book: $20 plus post.

The Horse in Art and History

One of the best books on equine art. Examples are printing in huge format so you can see detail and admire brushwork and blending of color. Back cover is a little use. Dust jacket protected in mylar sleeve. A treasure! $16 plus post.

Henry Koehler: Elegant Impressions of Turf and Field
This catalog of the exhibit at the Natuional Museum of Racing in Saratoga Springs, New York in 2003 is a collection of color plates of the paintings. 56 paintings of beautiful racing or hunting themes from the Duke of Beaufort's to Deauville to Cheltenham and home to Saratoga. What a ride. Like new condition, a duplicate. $15 plus post.

Drawing Horses
by Walter Foster
1998, softcover, oversized.
Instructional manual for sketching horses with pencil. A revision of the classic 1949 text. He does a nice job on the hoof. $4 plus post

Horse Racing
The Hulton Getty Picture Collection and Allsport Decades of Sport
Soft cover, approx 400 pages, black and white and color photos.
This book is a treasure and
one of my favorites. It is a photographic history of horse racing, with captions in English, French, and German. These are art photographs, the crisp black and white images that tell us so much about what went before. I will never part with my copy but this is one we had to sell and it's the sort of thing that people need to see, unless they are lovers of photography or horse history. Is that you? Then this is for you at the bargain price of $5 plus post.

Haddelsey's Horses: Paintings by Vincent Haddelsey
Text by Caroline Silver with Haddelsey
Oversized hardcover, 1978, with dust jacket in lovely condition
The horse in his landscape; this collection of paintings in the artist's unique, almost folk-art style shows horses doing their sporting and working best. Absolutely magic! $10 plus post.

On the History and Truth of the Unicorn:
Facsimile and Translation of an Old Manuscript by Michael Green
Soft cover, 64 pages, all color art
I'd file this under fantasy...except that I want to believe in unicorns, too. This is a fantasy art book extraordinaire. Very nicely designed, but in lightly used shape. All the folklore of the unicorn in one place with beautiful illustrations. $3 plus post.

The Unicorn Treasury
Stories, Poems and Unicorn Lore
by Bruce Coville, Illustrated by Tim Hildebrandt
A little beatup, but still a treasure. 168 pages, softcover. Read the inspired words of C.S. Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle and many others. $3 plus post.

The Most Beautiful Horses
Text by Dominic Klein, photos from around the world
Hardcover with dust jacket, 158 pages, black and white photography, 1971
I think this is the only book I have ever sold from Switzerland. It is a collection of photos of horses at work and in sport, shot in the late 1960s, and is literally a world tour. Includes a chapter on the horse in circuses. A snapshot of where the horse world was, 50 years ago, and beautifully crafted. $10 plus post.

Desiderata for Horse Lovers: A Guide to Life and Happiness
by Max Ehrmann
Hardcover with dust jacket
The age-old perscription for happiness illustrated with beautiful horse photos. Each double-page spread is a line from the manuscript. A beautiful gift! We sold these for Christmas and this is the last one, in perfectly new condition. (really nice) Size is about 5x5". $5 plus post.

The Royal Mews (Buckingham Palace)
Soft cover, color and black and white photos, 28 pages
A guide book to the stables at Buckingham Palace, includes photos of coaches and the Windsors riding and driving. Published perhaps in the 1970s, this is a period snapshot of the horsiest family in the world, just before all the scandals hit. Nicely done, and the driving details are excellent. How do you get the job of postillion? $3 plus post.

Man and the Horse: The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Hardcover, color and black and white plates, 128 pages, 1984, oversized "coffee table" book
Introduction by Diana Vreeland. Three essays comprise this richly illustrate book that accompanied a lavish exhibit of equestrian art in New York 25 years ago. The over-riding (ahem) theme is fashion, or at least the clothing one wears around horses, so the chapters are: 1) Man and the Horse: The Evolution of Riding and Its Influence on Equestrian Costume by Alexander Mackay-Smith; 2) Aside and Astride: A History of Ladies' Riding Apparel by Jean Druesdow; and 3) Fashion on Wheels by Thomas Ryder, the famed driving expert. The photos of old time children's riding fashions and ponies/donkeys are the best part of this book, althought the Stubbs plates are pretty fabulous. If you know anyone who is into sidesaddle outfits, this book has some lovely plates and photos. I love this book but don't know why I had two copies, so now you can have one two. $10 plus post.
